School Reopening plan for 2020-2021 School year

We have created this plan to aid in navigating the reopening of our school so that our teacher families feel safe and to reduce the impact of COVID-19 conditions upon beginning our school year. The guidelines referenced in this plan are based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and NYS Department of Health (DOH) and the NYS Education Dept (NYSED). Updates may be made to this plan on a periodic basis based on information provided by the CDC, WHO, and applicable federal, state and local agencies.

Facility, Capacity and Social Distancing

The top priority during the planning process was to maintain the health and safety of the entire school community. The development of the plan considered the number of students and staff allowed to return in person.

  • We have the ability to maintain the appropriate social distance and ventilation requirements as we will be outdoors for the entire school day. We will be using tents to protect students from rain, wind and snow. Additional space in the parking lot will be safely utilized for extra activities and play when necessary.
  • Children will need to wear appropriate clothing for the weather and when needed they will be provided with gear needed to keep them warm and dry.
  • Class sizes will remain at 9 students or below to ensure appropriate social distancing.
  • Students will go indoors for using the restroom but there is plenty of space for them to continue to maintain appropriate distance from one another.
  • Social distancing will be followed during snack time. Teacher Tom will ensure plenty of space for each student to safely remove their mask in order to eat and drink.

Face Coverings

Our school will adopt protocols and procedures consistent with public health guidance for students, parent helpers, our teacher and other individuals to ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is used to protect against the transmission of the COVID-19 virus when on school grounds and in school facilities.

Specifically, appropriate PPE means, at least, an acceptable face covering, which is strongly recommended to be worn by all individuals at all times but is required to be worn any time or place that individuals cannot maintain appropriate social distancing. However, students will be provided opportunities to remove their face coverings during snack, storytime or instructional time as permitted by the teacher and for short breaks so long as they maintain appropriate social distance. These “mask breaks” will be built in through the morning by the teacher. When students are struggling with their masks Teacher Tom and Parent helpers will be gentle in their approach to helping the children get used to wearing them. This link will be sent to parents for ideas on how to help with mask wearing.

Our school will be responsible for maintaining an adequate supply of disposable masks for distribution to students, our teacher and parent helpers that arrive without one.

Health Screenings

NYSED guidance requires that schools must implement mandatory health screenings, including temperature checks, of students, faculty, staff, and, where applicable, contractors, vendors, and visitors to identify any individuals who may have COVID-19 or who may have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus. Specifically, all individuals must have their temperature checked each day.

  • Parents will fill out a health survey prior to each school day for their child(ren). This may be accomplished online or in person at drop off. This survey will include a note of the child’s temperature and so long as it is below 100 degrees the child will be allowed to attend school. If a parent has not filled out the online form before arrival there will be a temporal scanner and survey available to them at school drop off. Our teacher and parent helpers will be sure each child has been checked in with the survey before they join their classmates for the school day.
  • Tom will be tested for Covid-19 every two weeks.
  • In the case that a child becomes sick during the school day they will be separated from the group with the parent helper until they can be picked up by a parent/guardian or emergency contact.
  • Please keep your child home if they are presenting with any signs or symptoms of illness including fever or chills, cough, fatigue, headache, diarrhea, sore throat, nausea/vomiting, muscle or body aches, congestion or runny nose, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell.

Hygiene, Cleaning and Disinfection

  • All outdoor tables, cubbies, chairs, mats, and surfaces will be set up and sanitized.
  • Tent set up and any other outdoor needs for that day.

During Class Time

  • Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the day, during field trips, and whenever handwashing isn’t accessible.
  • All highly touched surfaces and items being used and played with will be disinfected throughout the day by teacher and parent helper.
  • Items needing to be sanitized more thoroughly than on the spot will be put into a reserved bin to be cleaned later.
  • Back-up masks are strongly recommended to be packed in each child’s bag. School will provide disposable masks in the case it’s needed.
  • Students will bring their own snacks and water to be placed in their cubby.
  • Students will have their own school supplies that will not be shared with their classmates.

*In the event of a positive Covid-19 case among an EBNS community member, the entire play yard, tables, surfaces, cubbies, toys, etc. will be fully sanitized before school reopens after a 14 day closure.

Visitation to School Facilities (Drop off/Pick up/Parent Helper)

To maintain a safe environment for all we will work to minimize the number of people entering school areas and require CDC guidelines be followed for appropriate PPE and social distancing.

  • During drop off and pick up, if possible, please safely leave siblings in the car or at home.
  • During drop off and pick up, please take parent conversations away from the play yard so that we may minimize the number of people in one space.
  • When a parent or a visitor enters school for any reason they will be required to wear a face covering and follow guidelines regarding physical distancing.
  • If on your parent helper day you need to bring a sibling, please notify the parents of the classroom at least 24 hours ahead of time.
